In My Mailbox 3

Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South examines the nature of social authority and obedience and provides an insightful description of the role of middle class women in nineteenth century society. Through the story of Margaret Hale, a southerner who moves to the northern industrial town of Milton, Gaskell skillfully explores issues of class and gender, as Margaret's sympathy for the town mill workers conflicts with her growing attraction to the mill owner, John Thornton. This new and revised expanded edition sets the novel in the context of Victorian social and medical debate.

I'm sorry I didn't post this ON Sunday! I got home really late. (I was at a fantastic barbeque! I even met a little toy yorkie named Sophia. She wore green barretes and was very fancy xD) I checked on Amazon, Borders and B&N for a better description of North & South and this was all I could come up with! It's sad, really. This description barely encompasses what this book is truly about. But once I read it and have a review, I hope I can clarify the rather vague paragraph posted above. Maybe I might even convince someone to read it! That'd be a great reward. :) I still recommend its BBC movie counterpart. (I'm still in love with it if you can believe it!)

I was originally reading Betwixt when I decided to pick up Dust of a 100 dogs. I got in pretty far yesterday...so much so that I'll probably be done with it soon. I'm not sure how I feel about it yet; it's certainly unique though. ...Don't have much to report so I'll end this here!

  2. I want to read this. Have you read Cranford? I haven't but saw the BBC movie on Masterpiece Theatre and it was really good.

  3. I like the last two words of that rather vague paragraph, "medical debate." That bit sounds promising. Let me know what that's all about when you're done!

  4. I was wrong. I've read North and South, but I haven't seen the adaptation of it. It looks great, though, and I want to watch it soon! I actually saw the adaptation of Wives and Daughters which is another book by Gaskell. It was really cool, and now I want to read that book. Hope you enjoy N&S! I know I did.

  5. I really want to read this now... Should I read the book before I watch the BBC movie?

  6. It looks like a good read, though books where women have little power in society seem to frusturate me. Still, I will probably end up giving it a try. =)
Thanks so much for commenting and becoming a follower! BTW, I'm a sophmore; referring back to the question in the comment you left. =) What grade are you in?
As for the representation of roses, I have a theory that it's an ironic joke that the universe is playing on us. ;-p
