Teaser Tuesday

This week's teaser is from Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver, pg 74:

"Are you sleeping? Sam's voice was barely a whisper, but in the dark room where he didn't belong, it was like a shout. I rolled in my bed where he lay on the floor, a dark bundle curled in a nest of blankets and pillows. His presence, so strange and wonderful, seemed to fill the room and press against me. I didn't think I'd ever sleep again. "No."

"Can I ask you a question?"

"You already have."

He paused, considering. "Can I ask you two questions, then?"

"You already have."

Sam groaned and threw the one of the small soda pillows in my direction. It arced through the moonlight room, a blackened projectile, and thumped harmlessly by my head. "So you're a smartass, then."

I grinned in the darkness. "Okay, I'll play. What do you want to know?"

I'm almost done with Shiver and I keep asking myself, What took me so long to read this? It's just as good as everyone keeps saying it is! Thanks to the Z girls for pestering me to pick this up. I'm so grateful, haha! Thanks to you, I've fallen in love with Maggie's prose. (And Sam ♥)

"I spot a kid about to snap a girl's swimsuit straps. "Hands to yourself!" The kid looks at me with wide-eyed innocence. "Yeah, well, I saw you!" Little perverts like him should be branded so girls like me won't try to date them in high school. I'm sure Kurt snapped swimsuits!

I tug my swimsuit up, shorts down. "Is there a single person here who isn't compelled to break the rules?" I say it too loud, and a couple of mom types glare at me like How dare you talk about my snot-dripping cuties?"

Hope that got a few chuckes. :)

Pg 30: "Before the bell even rang the next day, Lena Duchannes was all everyone at Jackson could talk about. Somehow between storms and power outages, Loretta Snow and Eugenie Asher, Savannah's and Emily's mothers, had managed to get supper on the table and call just about everyone in the town to let them know that crazy Macon Ravenwood's "relation " was driving around Gatlin in his hearse, which they were sure he used to transport dead bodies in when no one was watching. From there it just got wilder."

This is a finished copy so any changes that were made are now permanent. ;)  I'm really enjoying the book, especially with Ethan as the MC. It's so rare to find guys telling the story nowadays. I'm glad I bought myself a copy.

Teaser Tuesday (on a Monday)

A gray steam of smoke poured under my doorway. ""One," I counted, slipping out of my white linen nightgown and putting on my favorite summer dress-the one with the blue gingham pattern and the delicate ruffles along the collar. "Two." I heard Mama's soft footsteps coming from her room as she made her way down the stairwell. "Three," I said just as the smoke alarm went off and another string of profanity wafted along with the smoke up through the grate and into my bedroom.

"She needs a stepladder to see that high," Kari said.

I banged her with my hip, and she bounced away, laughing.

I can't wait for the WB series. It looks good (including the guy who plays Stefan *drools*). I received another nomination for the Your Blog Rocks! awards by Lizzy. Thanks! :) Ooooh, today was different. I was up at five (shocking!), did my morning routine and flew out the door with my mom so I could arrive to my advising appointment at college on time. I made a mess of my scheduele, but whatevs. I can change it later. x3 I liked the advisor who attended me. She was like, "My goodness, *looks over papers* you're so bright! You're one of the smartest I've ever seen". Outwardly I was modest and quiet but inside I was going BOOYAH! and having a party.

Ahem. So I'm officially college-bound and actually excited about it! I was pouring through the course catalogue, checking out the classes available. (There's one called Death & Dying. Hmmm, do I sense a theme? Vampires=death) Even the history of Rock n' Roll! xD I'll be paying special attention to another book I received as well. The *shudder* driver's manual. I'm finally on the road (no pun intended) to getting my permit and then, driver's license. I kinda have to since I can't bum off a ride from mom forever...and it'd be pathetic at this point. My mom was like, "Welcome to reality!"

Already a few pages in, I knew I was going to have trouble getting through the book. I wasn't a big fan of Callie-it took her forever to get that no, she wasn't getting punked, she really was stuck in another era. I mean, when you're walking down busy streets and suddenly wake up in a dense forest, that's a little suspicious right? Anyways, she stumbles upon a Pemberly-esque mansion and is almost turned away when Emily, one of the ladies of the house, thinks that Callie is Rebecca, her childhood friend from America. Callie's desperate and lets her believe that it's true just so she can have a place to stay until she figures out what to do. The morning after, she gets introduced to Alex, the (hot!) duke of Harksbury and his mother (who's a much tamer version of Mrs. Bennet). As Callie realizes that she's going to be trapped there for a while, she befriends Emily and tries not to oogle Alex.

I liked the idea behind the book but was annoyed with how Callie reacted in some situations. Also, in the beginning it's clear that she's not exactly confident in herself and it takes her a while to shed her self-consciousness. Meanwhile, she makes a disaster of things as she tries to help Emily get out of an engagement and mistakes Alex for being nothing more than an arrogant piece of eye candy. (he later proves to be much more than that). I wish this book could've had a little more conflict; every problem that arises is easily patched up and I felt like that sucked out any possible chance of suspense. Emily was a fun character to read about; she was cute and had fashionista tendencies (involving muslin and laces, of course). Her friendship with Callie was nice to read about. As for Alex, he was a mini-Darcy, always serious and intense. I liked him because he cleaned up the messes Callie left in her wake and because he really was a nice guy, he just happened to be a duke with enormous responsibility on his tailored shoulders. I DO wish I could've seen more moments when it was just him and Callie, just so I could read about his "devastating and disarming smile."

So even though Prada & Prejudice didn't live up to my expectations (I was expecting waaay more action), I'd still say it's worth checking out if you want a quick, breezy read with a hopeful ending. It's fluffy and light. Cake for your brain.

"So your little waitress is still alive," Diane said, and her clear voice was audible through the whole bar. "Isn't that amazing."
"Her grandmother was murdered last week," Bill said quietly, trying to subdue Diane's desire to make a scene.
Her gorgeous lunatic brown eyes fixed on me, and I felt cold.
"Is that right?" she said and laughed.

I'm finding myself to like this series...and I'm growing fond of Sookie's naivete. It's charming. I don't know how I feel about Bill just yet. But I like Sam ♥. Funny that I'm reading about vampires. I had to have three shots yesterday and had my blood taken for testing. x_x; all in one sitting! my arms are still sore. But whatever.

I'm happy that you guys thought my review was well-written! I really do try. It's nice to know that it pays off. :)

1st teaser: For the first time, the man on the bench looked at the younger boy. His eyes were obscured by his glasses, the rest of his face was in shadow-but Nix did notice two things. The stranger was smiling, and despite an odd curve to his incisors that gave him a hungry, wolfish look, that smile, for the first time, didn't fill Nix with dread.

mmmm, I'm not going to give the second teaser. I think the first says enough for you all to be curious. Sorry for not posting these past two days, I've been out of it, stressing over finals this week while battling my relentless and evil senioritis. I really can't focus on school anymore but I'm forcing myself to... I had my music final today; I played my piece and I'm sure I impressed my teacher. She's Russian (Dimitri! ♥) and very stoic but when she smiled slightly, said nicely done (which is HUGE coming from her) I was very proud of myself. Kickin' musical butt since 4th grade, yo! xD Now I must concentrate on my art final which is draining my time (and patience). Love drawing, dislike my teacher. *sigh* But whatever! I promise that I'll have my next review up by...tomorrow. Thursday being the absolute latest. Okies? ;)
